Tour

It’s often been said, that if amateur golfers want to emulate professional swings, look to the LPGA Tour. That’s doesn’t necessary ring true for Charley Hull. As one of the premier ball strikers in the women’s game, Charley possesses a tremendous amount of speed and precision. Which is why the pure blade shape of P•7MB proved to be the perfect fit for her game in combination with the new TP5x golf ball.

As she prepares to take on the field in the third LPGA Tour major of the year, the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at Atlanta Athletic Club, let’s go behind the scenes to see how Charley fit into the equipment in her bag.

We know Charley to be a feel-based player, but when we took a step back, we realized the look of the club at address was her first point of reference. Before she even hit her first shot with P•7MB during our initial fitting, she loved the way they looked and commented on how the ‘matte’ finish fit her eye better compared to the chrome finish of her previous set.

This initial fitting session took place at the acclaimed and historic Wentworth Golf Club, which hosted the first Ryder Cup in Europe and presently is home to the BMW PGA Championship. Eager to test them, she warmed up with her gamers on the range. On the first shot with the new irons, she hit the sweet spot and commented straight away on how they felt more solid. As she continued to hit the P•7MBs, the sound was noticeably better – a softer but compressed sound and this was apparent every time she went between the two clubs.

Beyond the feel, the look at address was one of the main reasons the P•7MBs went straight into play. Preferring how they looked and felt gave her added confidence in the playability, and she was adamant that these would become her new weapons.

“She is a purist, as most people who choose to play blades probably are, so the constant offset through the bag was more appealing to her. Her display with a 4-iron was among the best I've ever seen. She literally grouped seven 4-iron shots within 2.8 yards - same line, same flight and spin. Very impressive stuff.”

Her specs were matched to her current set with no adjustments made. A quick loft check on two clubs just to see if it made an impact on spin, but each were identical, so all specs were left. That may change due to course conditions, but our team will base any tweaks on Charley’s feedback and her desired performance for the course. All specs are remaining in her standard set up for the KPMG Women’s PGA.

Playing a strong shaft with low-spin properties (Modus Tour 125S), among the strongest of any player on the LPGA Tour, the new TP5x with its slight softer urethane cover offered that little bit extra spin and a flight she was more familiar with, just carrying a little further.

Charley was able to consistently manage her spin rates from shot to shot, meaning the collective average was not only longer, but more accurate.

Ahead of the ANA Inspiration, the LPGA’s first major of the year, Charley switched putters into the new TP Hydro Blast Soto.

“We spent a lot of time that week on Charley’s putting stroke, looking for better rhythm and timing and she’s found it with her TP Soto. We took her previous gamer and built up the Soto in her exact specs and as I talked through the benefits of Pure Roll technology, she unsurprisingly just wanted to use it.”
ADRIAN RIETVELD, SENIOR TOUR REP

Just like her irons, once she got it in her hands it was all about the look and feel. After marking a line down the middle of her TP5x, Rietveld recorded her hitting the ball in slow motion. This helped her to easily see the line staying straight as the ball moved forward, confirming the performance matched her feels. Adding half an inch to the putter helped her with better distance control and consistency.

Charley carries this same set up this week, as she comes off a strong showing at the LPGA Classic where she finished at 16-under-par (T15).
