Rory McIlroy came into the TOUR Championship at T5 with a starting score of 4-under. The lead was seemingly insurmountable, as he was 6 shots back of leader and fellow Team TaylorMade athlete Scottie Scheffler, who teed off at 10-under. Ironically, he triple bogeyed his first hole of the week. Perhaps it was an omen. By the close of competition on Sunday, he’d overcome the six-shots to win his third FedExCup title, making him the first golfer in history to accomplish the feat.
His driver was a weapon all week. He led the field with the longest drive in competition at 346 yards (which he pumped in the final round) and averaged 336 yards for the week with his Stealth Plus Carbonwood. At the pivotal par-3 15th , Rory electrified the crowd with a 31ft bomb for birdie to push himself back into a tie with Scheffler. His TP5x rolled end-over-end roll off the face of his Spider X; it looked like center-cup the entire time.
An all-world par at 16 left him a shot clear of the field and a (birdie or par) on his 72nd hole left him at 22-under-par, cementing a 2-shot victory.
Other key stats from the win include:
Rory has played the same driver, 5-wood, 4i-9i, 54° wedge and putter set up for the entirety of the 2022 calendar year. Situationally and strategically, we've seen Rory opt for a few different 3-wood options, as well as a variety of top and bottom of the bag set-ups.
