TaylorMade Gear

It’s been almost 20 years since the TaylorMade’s first movable weight driver changed the game and influenced the way the industry makes drivers. Spider GT Max has the potential to do the same thing in the world of flat sticks.

The standout feature is, of course, the movable weights, which can be adjusted to impact face rotation, CG and MOI to reduce twisting on off-center strikes.

In this article, we'll explore how the weight system works and how you can use it to improve your putting.

First things first, you must know your tendencies. Are you someone who tends to miss to the left or the right? Do you struggle with straight putts? We recommend a little test to figure this out.

Test Yourself

Start by finding a relatively straight putt on the practice green. Hit at least five putts from 10-15 feet and analyze the results. Did you miss more to the left or right?

Understanding your misses is key to getting the most out of the movable weight system in Spider GT Max. If you tend to miss to the left, placing both weights in Position 1 will help slow down the face rotation. If you tend to miss to the right, placing both weights in Position 3 will help you release the putter down the line. This means the putter is changing for you, the player, rather than you having to adjust to the putter.

Why does it work? For pushers who miss putts right, having both weights all the way forward makes the face close faster, which in turn helps you start more putts on the intended line. Side note: If you’re someone who prefers the toe-flow of a blade putter but wants a more forgiving and stable shape, this is the setting for you.

For putt pullers who miss to the left, putting both weights all the way back slows down the closure rate of the face – helping you return the putter to square at impact. This setting also generates the highest MOI, or moment of inertia, which boils down to resistance to twisting on off-center strikes. A.k.a. forgiveness. So, if you’re someone who struggles to make consistent contact on your putts (meaning you hit some on the toe, some on the heel, some all over the place), this setting will benefit you the most.

Positioning both weights in the middle creates moderate face rotation and performs most similar to our popular Spider X design. This the most versatile setting and best pairs with players who already have a very consistent putting motion. In fact, you can even think of it like this. The weight settings give you three putters in one, with performance features that mimic some of TaylorMade’s most popular designs.

Position 1 – Deepest CG, closely matches Spider Tour.

Position 2 – Central CG, closely matches Spider X.

Position 3 – Forward CG, closely matches Spider GT.

In conclusion, the moveable weight on the Spider GT Max allows you to customize the putter to fit your individual needs. By understanding your tendencies and experimenting with different weight settings, you can become a more consistent putter while keeping the same putting motion.

If you want to get deeper into the weeds, you can experiment with weights in different positions (heel weight in Position 3, toe weight in Position 1 for example) to manipulate toe hang and CG. The video below gives you an in-depth look at the various settings and how they influence performance.
